Overall Story Plan

In the beginning a girl is taken hostage and she questioned about a tape. She cries and doesn't reveal anything, until she is blackmailed with a picture of her son. It is implied that she is killed by her captor. The film then goes back in time showing the events of a previous week. At an office block in the city one of the interns in killed in the parking lot. There are lots of CCTV cameras around but when the police check the machines the tape that would have shown the killers face is missing. In the autopsy it is revealed she was raped. Then the girl from before is seen working there. It goes back to the hostage scenario and the girl in the beginning is still alive. She recognises the her captor, the daughter of the intern out to get justice for her daughter. The hostage then empathises with him and reluctantly reveals her boss has the tape and he committed the crime. The father figure then enacts revenge on the boss by sneaking in late at night and through a cleverly placed trap leaves him hanging by his ankles from the roof with the tape attached to his chest. He then calls the police and disappears into the night.

What is the Purpose and Form of Your First 2 Minutes of Your Movie?

MY BRAINSTORM

The purpose and form of my thriller is to create a thriller opening that will reveal a criminal character without giving away too much of the character. My aim of this is to create an opening scene that builds a sense of tension and an uneasy atmosphere similar to that of Ils. In this opening sequence, a girl and her mother are driving in the car, there is no music and only diegetic sound. The car breaks down and the mother puts the bonnet up, when the daughter goes to check on her, she has disappeared and the daughter gets strangled. The killer is not fully revealed and the main victim has too, not been revealed but the suspense and tension has been built. I am to do a similar thing in my opening sequence. I intend to do this by filming the majority of shots on the victim, specifically close ups to focus on her facial expressions and not necessarily the mise en scene. In my sequence, there will be a girl held captive in an attic pleading with her captor to let her leave. I believe that my mixture of obvious lighting and obscure camera shots will help me to convey and fulfil the conventions of the thriller genre

Here is a questionnaire me, Jamie and Taylan have created. Later on today we are going to hand them out. I think that we have created an appropriate amount of diverse questions to understand if we have successfully fulfilled our brief.

Filming

Last night, we filmed our AS thriller opening. I think that overall, it was successful. We got a range of shots that varied in lighting and originality. A few hours before filming, our original set plans fell through and we were unable to use the basement to film. Therefore we decided to film in my attic. I think that although this was not the original plan, it worked out well and was appropriately fitted to my scene. We decided to film the establishing shots torch lit as it created a sense of mystery and an eerie atmosphere. From studying previous thriller openings I had learned that a common convention was low-lighting to secure a sense of the unknown. One issue we faced was that, after filming, we realised the audio would sound misplaced and cut up as the microphone was attached to the camera during each individual shot. Because we had filmed from so many different angles. This meant that the audio would sound different from each different angel also. We decided to take the longest audio track and edit the shots over it. Below I have showed some screen grabs of the shots we made. I will start editing tomorrow.
